Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
