Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
