No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
