Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."

The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
