A recent study suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
