A defence minister has confirmed that the MoD is actively investigating the possible security risks posed by Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to avoid discussing secret matters in all cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while travelling in Chinese cars.
He explained that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any car, because of the growing threats of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, the minister responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Security Background
The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and bring disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
The broader security situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official activities, from transport usage to discussions practices.
